Ocimum minimum, also known as bush basil, is a perennial plant in the Lamiaceae family. In Portugal, it is called manjerico and is a significant symbol of the country. During the month of June, which is the celebration of Portuguese Midsummer, manjerico is widely sold in stores and street fairs. It is often given as a gift to lovers and is a popular motif in marchas populares. The plant is traditionally presented in a small flowerpot with a paper flower and flag featuring a written poem. It is known for its pleasant smell and has had a cultural impact in Portuguese art, including works by Fernando Pessoa and Amália Rodrigues.
