Mentha japonica is a plant species endemic to Japan, specifically the islands of Hokkaido and Honshu. It was first identified by Japanese botanist Tomitaro Makino in 1906 and is commonly known as "princess mint" due to its small size. It has been classified as a Near Threatened species by the Japanese Ministry of Environment. Its taxonomy has been difficult to determine due to its tendency to hybridize with other mint species. It is genetically similar to Mentha gattefossei and has a chromosome count of 2n = 48. M. japonica is a perennial plant that grows up to 40 centimeters tall and reproduces through rhizomes. Its leaves are oblong and its flowers can range from white to pale violet. The essential oil components of M. japonica vary, with menthone, isomenthone, and pulegone being the primary constituents. It is used as an aromatic herb and traditional remedy, and has been used topically to treat mastitis in cows. It is considered a rare plant in its native range and is classified as Near Threatened due to habitat loss.
