Genus Hypenia in Family Lamiaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Hypenia (Mart. ex Benth.) Harley is a genus of Lamiaceae comprising about 40 species centered in Brazil, with a few taxa extending into eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. The type species is Hypenia spicata (Spreng.) Harley, and recent floristic treatments recognize the group as distinct from Hyptis in having persistent, membranous, papery calyces that obscure the nutlets and an inflorescence architecture dominated by spikes and congested heads (Harley, 1988; WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024). These plants are generally subshrubs or herbs with typically quadrangular stems and opposite, simple leaves that are usually serrate; stipules are absent. The inflorescences form terminal spikes or capitate glomerules, the calyces are elongate and membranous in fruit, and the corollas are bilabiate with a glabrous throat. The ovary is superior and bicarpellary with basal or axile placentation, maturing into four ovoid, brownish nutlets without pronounced ornamentation. Subgeneric and sectional treatments have been employed historically, but modern revisions continue to evaluate these ranks against molecular and morphological evidence (Harley, 1988; WFO, 2024).
Diversity and distribution are highest in the Caatinga and Cerrado of Brazil, reflecting strong endemism in these seasonally dry and savanna biomes; species occur in rocky outcrops, campo rupestre, and xeromorphic shrublands, typically at low to moderate elevations. Biogeographically, the genus displays a Brazil-centered pattern, with occasional Andean influences toward Bolivia and a few records in adjacent Chaco-like habitats, underscoring a primarily South American savanna–dry forest complex (Harley, 1988; GBIF, 2024; WFO, 2024). Pollination and dispersal are incompletely documented; floral morphology suggests bee visitation is likely, and the papery calyces and nutlet size are consistent with barochory, with occasional wind-assisted movement from open habitats. Chromosome numbers are not consistently reported across species, and a reliable base number remains uncertain (Harley, 1988).
Taxonomy and phylogeny place Hypenia within the Hyptis complex in Lamiaceae, where the genus is segregated by calyx and inflorescence characters. Authoritative treatments accept Hypenia as distinct from Hyptis (Harley, 1988; WFO, 2024), and ongoing phylogenies refining mint relationships (Harley and Pastre, 2012) continue to probe generic boundaries and species limits. The genus has direct relevance as a component of Caatinga–Cerrado flora, occasionally collected in horticulture for its xeromorphic ornamental value, with no significant timber or crop roles; it is not widely recognized as invasive outside its native range. Conservation priorities focus on continued habitat loss from agricultural expansion and altered fire regimes in its core regions (WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024). Improved species-level taxonomy and targeted phylogenetic work remain essential to refine generic limits and conservation assessments (Harley, 1988; WFO, 2024; GBIF, 2024).
