This species, also known as the capa rose, is a critically endangered plant found in Puerto Rico. It was first collected in 1827 and has only been found in seven locations, all but one in Puerto Rico. It is threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation and agriculture, as well as hurricanes. The plant is a small evergreen tree or shrub with white star-shaped flowers and purple berries. Its habitat is in the Luquillo Mountains, specifically the palo Colorado forest region. Efforts have been made to protect and increase the population of the capa rose, including a recovery plan implemented in 1995. This plan includes monitoring the plant's population and reproduction, enforcing restrictions on collecting and construction, and conducting research to better understand the species and its habitat.
