Tecomanthe speciosa, also known as the Three Kings vine or akapukaea, is a subtropical forest liane that was first discovered on Manawatāwhi / Three Kings Islands in 1945. It is the only known specimen of its kind in the wild, with no other specimens ever being found. This species is part of a tropical genus not typically found in New Zealand, with four other species found in other regions. Tecomanthe speciosa is a vigorous climber with large glossy leaves and cream-colored tubular flowers that emerge directly from the stem in clusters. While it appears to be adapted for pollination by bats, it is now pollinated by birds in cultivation. This plant is able to survive in temperatures as low as -2°C and has been noted to survive in domestic gardens as far south as Dunedin. It is considered to be "Nationally Critical" in terms of conservation status. After its discovery, cuttings were taken and the plant has become popular in New Zealand gardens. It requires warm conditions and is sensitive to frost. It can be grown from cuttings, layering, and seed, with seedlings growing vigorously and potentially flowering within a few years.
