Tanaecium Sw. is a neotropical genus of the Bignoniaceae, comprising roughly 15 species of woody vines and shrubs (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Its centre of diversity lies in low‑land rain‑forests of the Amazon basin and the Guiana Shield, with additional representatives in Central America from Costa Rica to Panama and in the Atlantic forest of eastern Brazil. The type species, originally designated by Swartz, is Tanaecium exitiosum (Sw.) (Olmstead et al., 2012).

Plants are typically climbing lianas or erect shrubs with opposite, compound leaves that are usually trifoliolate; stipules are minute or absent and the leaflets are entire to faintly toothed. Inflorescences arise terminally or from the upper leaf axils as panicles or racemes. The corolla is tubular, often white to creamy, with a slightly swollen base, and the calyx bears five shallow lobes. The ovary is bicarpellate with axile placentation, each locule containing two to several ovules; the fruit is a flattened, winged capsule that splits longitudinally, and the seeds possess papery wings that aid wind dispersal.

Centres of endemism include the Venezuelan Guayana and the coastal forests of Brazil, where several taxa are restricted to riverine or swampy habitats between 0 and 800 m elevation. Species such as Tanaecium neotropicale are narrowly endemic to Costa Rica, illustrating the genus’s contribution to regional floristic distinctiveness.

Pollination biology is only sparsely documented, but field observations of large, nocturnal, funnel‑shaped flowers suggest bat or hawkmoth visitation for several species (Silva‑Luz et al., 2021). Dispersal is primarily anemochorous, facilitated by the winged capsules. Chromosome numbers are reported only sporadically and lack a consensus; the base number for the genus therefore remains uncertain.

Taxonomically, Tanaecium is placed in the tribe Bignonieae and forms a monophyletic lineage nested within the “core Bignonieae” clade in recent molecular phylogenies (Olmstead et al., 2012). Recent revisions have synonymised a number of former species under Tanaecium exitiosum and reassigned others to the closely related genus Adenocalymma (G. Olmstead, 2009). Alternative treatments retain Tanaecium as a distinct genus, while some authors merge it with Mansoa; both perspectives are represented in current floras (WFO, 2024).

The genus has limited commercial use. A few species are cultivated as ornamental climbers for their fragrant, night‑blooming flowers, and the lightweight wood of certain lianas is occasionally used in local handicrafts. No species are regarded as aggressive weeds, and invasive potential appears negligible.

Conservation concerns centre on habitat loss through deforestation and hydrological alteration of riverine habitats. Formal assessments are incomplete for most taxa, highlighting a research gap in population status and distribution mapping. Future work integrating molecular and ecological data will be essential to refine species delimitation and guide conservation priorities (POWO, 2024).
