Genus Radermachera in Family Bignoniaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Radermachera (Zoll. & Moritzi), placed in the Bignoniaceae, is a large Asian genus of trees and shrubs estimated at about 120–180 species, with the greatest concentration in Southeast Asia and the southern Himalaya (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Millingtonia L.f., once recognized as a distinct genus, is now treated as a synonym of Radermachera, and its type (Millingtonia hortensis L.f.) remains the nomenclatural type of the combined name; recent treatments consistently follow this circumscription (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024; G.F. Smith et al., 2022).
Morphologically, Radermachera is recognized by its usually evergreen, often scandent trees with opposite, once- to twice-pinnate leaves that bear small stipules at the petiole base. The inflorescences are thyrses or panicles, and the bell-shaped corollas are white to pale cream with a five-lobed limb. A single prominent nectary disk surrounds a superior ovary with axile placentation, and the fruit is an elongate, terete capsule bearing numerous winged seeds that aid wind dispersal. The absence of paired terminal tendrils and the combination of stipules, bipinnate foliage, and consistently winged seeds distinguish Radermachera from many other Asian Bignoniaceae.
Species richness peaks in mainland Southeast Asia, Sumatra, and Borneo, with outlying diversity in the Himalaya and southern China; numerous taxa are locally endemic in limestone forests and monsoon woodland mosaics. Ecological breadth is broad but most species favor lowland to lower montane evergreen or semi-evergreen forest. Seeds are wind-dispersed, and flowers are predominantly bee-pollinated, with occasional crepuscular visitation by hawkmoths suggested for some taxa; synchronous flowering can be triggered by seasonal drought (Gouvêa et al., 2019).
Recent phylogenetic work confirms Radermachera s.l. as monophyletic within the “Radermachera clade” of Bignoniaceae and supports the synonymization with Millingtonia (Gouvêa et al., 2019; Olmstead et al., 2009). Chromosome counts are known for a limited number of species; for example, R. xylocarpa has 2n = 36 (n = 18), suggesting x = 18 as a frequent base number (IOPI PCD, 2024). Infraspecific taxonomy remains unsettled, and comprehensive recircumscription is pending for several tropical Asian lineages.
Several species are widely cultivated for ornament or timber; R. xylocarpa is used in restoration plantings for its fast growth and wind-dispersed seed, while invasive behavior is not widely documented. Millingtonia hortensis is a familiar ornamental and street tree in many tropical cities, frequently listed under the Radermachera name (GBIF, 2024).
Conservation is hampered by taxonomic instability and insufficient IUCN assessments; many regional assessments are outdated or lacking. Addressing phylogenomic gaps, finalized synonymizations, and standardized conservation status will be essential to inform management and future naming practices (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024; G.F. Smith et al., 2022).
