Strobilanthes kunthiana, also known as Kurinji or Neelakurinji, is a shrub found in the shola forests of the Western Ghats in India. Its purplish blue flowers bloom only once every 12 years, giving the Nilgiri Mountains its name. The Paliyan tribal people use it to calculate their age. The plant belongs to the genus Strobilanthes, which has around 250 species, with 46 found in India. Kurinji grows at an altitude of 1300 to 2400 metres and can reach heights of up to 180 cm. It is an example of a plietesial, or long interval bloomer, and is also known for its mass seeding phenomenon called masting. Its habitat is threatened by human development, but it is protected in the Kurinjimala Sanctuary. The Kurinji flower is referenced in classical Tamil literature and has been featured in a historical novel. In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the neelakurinji in his Independence Day speech, coinciding with its bloom.
