Genus Stenostephanus in Family Acanthaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Stenostephanus (Acanthaceae) comprises about 55 species of erect subshrubs and shrubs that are most diverse in the northern Andes, with additional taxa throughout Central America and southeastern Mexico. Its type species is S. lindenii (Nees). Kew’s Plants of the World Online and the World Flora Online list the genus in Acanthaceae and summarize its Neotropical distribution (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).
Morphologically, species of Stenostephanus are recognized by opposite leaves and by typically distinct bracts subtending solitary or few-flowered axillary inflorescences. The corolla is strongly bilabiate with a reduced upper lip and a conspicuously 3-lobed lower lip; four didynamous stamens are present, with a style that bears two stigmatic lobes of unequal size. Ovaries are usually 2-locular with axile placentation, and fruits are explosively dehiscent capsules that bear several seeds each. These characters align with the core morphology of Acanthaceae (Flora of Panama, 1988; Daniel & Tripp, 2024).
The genus ranges from southern Mexico through Central America to the northern and central Andes, often in moist montane forests, forest margins, and rocky outcrops from approximately 500 to 3000 meters elevation. Centers of diversity lie in the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador, with numerous narrow endemics in cloud and elfin forests. The elevational breadth and habitat specificity imply sensitivity to forest loss and climate-driven range shifts (Tripp et al., 2017).
Pollination and dispersal mechanisms are insufficiently documented for the genus as a whole. Flowers consistent with a generalized pollination syndrome and the suite of corolla traits suggest insect visitation, but formal demonstrations are sparse; birds have not been recorded as pollinators. Seed dispersal follows the typical Acanthaceae explosive capsule mechanism, but the persistence and morphology of seed arils in this genus remain inconsistently reported (Tripp et al., 2017; WFO, 2024).
Stenostephanus has not been widely split into formal subgeneric or sectional groups in modern treatments. Previously, some taxa were placed in Hansteinia and other segregates; those names are now largely synonymized within a broadened Stenostephanus in recent regional floristic accounts (Flora of Panama, 1988; Flora Mesoamericana, 2015). The tribe-level placement within Acanthaceae is Justiceae, although finer tribal delimitations have seen historical flux (Tripp et al., 2017). As a result, generic boundaries, although now comparatively stable, warrant targeted phylogenetic scrutiny.
The genus has limited horticultural use and is seldom cultivated outside botanical institutions; many high-elevation species are not in cultivation. While no Stenostephanus species are recorded as major weeds, habitat disturbance is the principal conservation concern, particularly for narrow endemics. Continued taxonomic revision, updated phylogenies for the Acanthaceae tribe Justiceae, and targeted conservation assessments remain priorities (Daniel & Tripp, 2024; Kiel et al., 2019).
