Ruellia strepens, also known as limestone wild petunia, is a perennial herb native to the central and eastern United States. It grows up to 1 meter tall and prefers moist, partly shady areas. Its leaves are lanceolate or ovate with smooth or slightly undulate margins. The flowers are lavender to bluish and have 5 flaring lobes. Unlike many plants, R. strepens continues to grow after blooming, resulting in taller late season plants. The genus name honors a French physician and botanist, and the specific epithet refers to the rustling noises made by the plant's seeds. This species is found in various habitats, including forests, river banks, and pastures, and is listed as endangered or critically imperiled in some states.
