Pachystachys coccinea, also known as the Cardinals guard, is a perennial evergreen shrub found in French Guiana, Brazil, and Peru. It has dark ovate to elliptic leaves and produces red flowers on terminal spikes. While it can grow up to six feet tall, cultivated plants are typically shorter. The genus name, Pachystachys, comes from the Greek word for thick spike, which describes the plant's flowering spikes. The species name, coccinea, is derived from the Latin word for scarlet, in reference to the vibrant red color of its flowers.
