Justicia gendarussa, also known as willow-leaved justicia, is a small shrub that is native to China and distributed in Sri Lanka, India, and Malaysia. It is widely used for its medicinal and insecticidal properties, and is harvested for its leaves to treat various ailments such as asthma, rheumatism, and skin problems. It is also being studied for its potential as a male contraceptive and as a source of a compound that inhibits an enzyme crucial to the development of HIV. The plant is cultivated through hydroponic systems and silviculture, and has a high root infection and strong mycorrhizal association. It contains several phytochemicals and has anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. J. gendarussa is also being explored as a potential phytoremediator due to its ability to absorb high amounts of certain metals, but this would render it unusable for medicinal purposes.
