Acanthus balcanicus is an herbaceous perennial plant native to the Balkan peninsula, up to Dalmatia. It is also cultivated in many European and American gardens. It grows up to 80 cm tall and has dark green, shiny, deeply lobed and cut leaves. It flowers in mid summer from July to August, with a long flowering stem and a lower lip and upper tooth-like lip.
