Geranium lucidum, also known as shining cranesbill, is a herbaceous annual plant native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. It has been introduced to North America as a garden plant and has become naturalised in some areas, particularly the Pacific Northwest, where it is considered an invasive species and noxious weed. The plant has red stems, glossy leaves, and bright pink flowers that bloom from May to August. It is commonly found on limestone rocks and walls, in churchyards, and on roadside verges. Shining cranesbill has good dispersal abilities and can thrive on various types of soil. In the US, it has been declared a noxious weed in Washington and Oregon and has been detected in several other states. It has also been introduced to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In the Pacific Northwest, it often grows alongside another invasive species, herb Robert, and can outcompete native plants in woodlands and forest glades. Legislation has been put in place to prohibit its transportation and sale in Washington state.
