Sherardia L. (Rubiaceae) is monotypic, containing only Sherardia arvensis (L.) L., the type species. Native to the temperate Palaearctic from western Europe to western Asia, it has naturalised widely in North America, Australia and elsewhere (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). It occurs from sea level to 1500 m, preferring open sun. It grows in open, disturbed habitats such as arable fields, meadows and roadside verges, often on calcareous soils (Euro+Med, 2023).

Sherardia is a low annual herb, 10–30 cm tall, with opposite, simple, lanceolate leaves bearing interpetiolar stipules. Leaf surfaces are glabrous, seldom bearing hairs. Flowers form compact terminal heads or axillary clusters, each with a four‑merous, tubular, white‑to‑pink corolla. The ovary is inferior, bicarpellate with axile placentation; the fruit is a schizocarpic capsule splitting into two mericarps (Mabberley, 2017).

The species shows broad ecological tolerance, occurring from low‑land fields to sub‑montane grasslands across the western Palaearctic, and is absent from true alpine or boreal zones. While not endemic, distinct regional morphotypes have been noted. It behaves as a pioneer in disturbed soils, preferring well‑drained, calcareous substrates (Euro+Med, 2023).

Pollination likely involves small insects, consistent with the modest corolla and four‑merous structure. Self‑compatibility appears common, facilitating seed set in isolated plants. Seed release is ballistic; the capsule dehisces to disperse seeds locally, with occasional long‑distance transport via farm equipment or animals. Sherardia completes its life cycle within a single growing season.

The genus is retained as monotypic in current treatments (POWO, 2024). Molecular phylogenies place Sherardia within tribe Rubieae, near the Galium clade, supporting its distinction despite similarity (Robbrecht & Manen, 2006). No subgeneric sections are recognized in Sherardia. Historically, Linnaeus placed the species in Galium, but modern taxonomy treats it as a separate genus (Mabberley, 2017).

In agriculture Sherardia arvensis is a modest weed of cereal fields and fallows; its shallow roots make it easy to control and it rarely reaches problematic densities. Its shallow taproot makes it susceptible to shallow tillage and hand pulling. Occasionally it is cultivated as a low‑maintenance ornamental groundcover for its early‑summer flowers (Mabberley, 2017).

The species is assessed as Least Concern throughout its range, with no major threats identified (POWO, 2024). However, ongoing habitat loss, changing land‑use and climate variability may impact local populations, and continued monitoring will be essential for its persistence. Future research should quantify its competitive effects on crop yields and potential range shifts under climate change.
