Genus Schumanniophyton in Family Rubiaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Schumanniophyton (Harms) belongs to Rubiaceae (coffee family) and includes about five species of shrubs or small trees. The genus is native to West to Central Africa in lowland rainforest and swamp-forest mosaics of the Guineo-Congolian region, with a localized distribution in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). The type species is commonly cited as S. problematicum (Harms) A. Chev., although recent treatments reassign it to Ramosmania as R. heterophylla (A. Chev.) J. Groleau (Groleau, 1989), a treatment not universally accepted (POWO, 2024).
Diagnostic traits include opposite leaves, interpetiolar stipules that are often caducous, and indumentum of simple trichomes on young parts. Flowers are pentamerous with a narrow corolla tube and well-exserted anthers; the ovary is inferior with axile placentation and numerous ovules. The fruit is a multilocular, often ellipsoid to slightly didymous berry, maturing yellow to orange and frequently with persistent calyx lobes.
Diversity is centered in coastal West Africa, with disjunct occurrences inland. The genus shows marked habitat specialization, being most frequent in riverine and swamp-forest edges and secondary growth rather than dry high-canopy forest; elevations are lowland to mid-elevation (
