It is an evergreen shrub or small tree, growing to 5 m tall, with a dense, rounded crown. The leaves are opposite, oval-shaped, 4–7 cm long and 2–4 cm broad, glossy dark green above, paler and slightly downy beneath. The flowers are white, 2–3 cm diameter, with four petals and numerous stamens. The fruit is a red drupe, 1–2 cm diameter, containing a single seed.
