Diodia virginiana, also known as Virginia buttonweed, is a perennial plant in the Rubiaceae family. It has opposite leaves that are often mottled due to a virus and produces white, cross-shaped flowers with 4 petals. The green fruits of this plant can often be found floating on water. While native to Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico, and parts of the United States, it has also been naturalized in Japan, Taiwan, and northern California. However, it can become a nuisance weed and is difficult to eradicate due to its underground parts that remain even after attempts to remove the plant. This species is found in various regions along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, as well as in the Tennessee and Ohio River Valleys and the southern Great Plains.
