Coprosma ernodeoides, also known as black-fruited coprosma, is a low-growing shrub found only on the islands of Maui and Hawai‘i. It has narrow, shiny, dark-green leaves and small flowers, but its most distinctive feature is its shiny black fruit. This plant is only found in alpine areas and can grow in a variety of habitats. The fruit is an important food source for the nēnē, a native Hawaiian bird. Native Hawaiians also used the fruit and inner bark for various purposes. The Hawaiian name for this plant, kūkaenēnē, refers to its resemblance to nēnē dung, while its scientific name, Coprosma, means "smelling like dung." This species was first described in 1860 and is the only Coprosma species on the Hawaiian islands with black fruit.
