Genus Arachnothryx in Family Rubiaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Arachnothryx (Rubiaceae, tribe Guettardeae) is a neotropical shrub‑to‑small‑tree genus that comprises roughly 80–90 accepted species (POWO, 2024). It ranges from central Mexico through Central America into northern South America, occupying montane cloud forests, moist lowland forests, and seasonally dry woodlands up to 2 000 m. The type species, designated by the original author, is Arachnothryx leucophylla (Planch.) (McVaugh, 1993).
Diagnostic traits separating the genus from close relatives are a combination of opposite, usually entire leaves, well‑developed interpetiolar stipules that are often partially fused, terminal paniculate or thyrsoid inflorescences bearing numerous small, white‑to‑pinkish 5‑merous flowers with a short corolla tube, and an inferior 2‑5‑locular ovary with axile placentation that matures into a capsular fruit containing 1–5 angular seeds (McVaugh, 1993). Vegetatively the plants often have a reddish-brown bark and a dense indumentum of simple hairs, especially on young shoots.
Diversity is highest in the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Trans‑Mexican Volcanic Belt of Mexico, where many species are locally endemic (Lorence, 1999). A secondary center occurs in the Central American highlands, especially in Guatemala and Honduras, while a handful of taxa reach Colombia and Ecuador. Most species favor shaded, humid habitats on limestone or volcanic soils, and a few occur in drier forest edges.
Pollination appears to be primarily entomophilous, with small bees and flies documented on several Mexican taxa (Kainulainen et al., 2022). Seed dispersal is likely endozoochorous, as many birds consume the fleshy arils surrounding the seed coat. Chromosome numbers are rarely reported; existing counts for a few species (e.g., 2n = 44) suggest a base number of x = 11, but broader surveys are lacking (Luebert, 2020).
Taxonomically, Arachnothryx is recognized as a distinct genus in most recent treatments (POWO, 2024; McVaugh, 1993), although some authors have merged it into Guettarda as a section (Lundell, 1978). Molecular work places the genus within the Guettardeae clade, closely allied to Bobea and Chomelia, though relationships remain only weakly supported (Kainulainen et al., 2022). A recent re‑circumscription retained all Mexican and Central American species as Arachnothryx, while redefining the subtribal limits (Lorence, 1999).
Human relevance is modest: several species are cultivated as ornamental shrubs for their glossy foliage and fragrant flowers, while a few Central American taxa are collected for local timber in small‑scale construction. None are major agricultural crops, and no species are listed as serious weeds.
Conservation concerns focus on habitat loss from deforestation and urban expansion, particularly for Mexican endemics. Targeted surveys of poorly known populations and phylogenetic clarification of ambiguous taxa are needed to guide future preservation strategies (POWO, 2024).
