Suggest a correction!Geniostoma (J.R.Forst. & G.Forst.) sits within Loganiaceae (order Gentianales) and comprises about 42 accepted species distributed through New Zealand, Norfolk and Kermadec Islands, the Chatham Islands, and several South Pacific archipelagoes to Tonga and Samoa, occurring in coastal and lowland forest and shrubland. Geniostoma ligustrifolium is designated as the type species. Diagnostic morphology includes shrubs or small trees bearing opposite leaves with conspicuous interpetiolar stipules forming a short sheath, often an indumentum of stellate hairs; axillary cymes or solitary flowers; a five‑lobed campanulate to rotate corolla and pentamerous calyx; a superior, usually bilocular ovary with axile placentation; and a fleshy berry containing numerous small seeds with a ruminate endosperm, a feature consistently reported in New Zealand taxa. Diversity and range center on New Zealand, where regional endemics such as the Three Kings Islands’ G. densevillosum occur, with local concentrations at low to mid elevations (generally below 600 m) in coastal forests, dunes, and margins; beyond New Zealand the genus is more scattered through Pacific islands, showing typical island‑archipelago patterns. Intrinsic biology is relatively under‑studied; corollas and berries suggest generalist insect pollination and bird dispersal, but these syndromes remain largely inferred rather than experimentally verified; base chromosome number is not securely established across the genus. Taxonomy and phylogeny rest on stable placement in Loganiaceae as circumscribed by recent APG frameworks and global family treatments; recent revisions reduced Australian elements formerly treated as Geniostoma into Logania (Conn, 1995), while the Pacific and New Zealand members retained as Geniostoma receive broad but not fully resolved species delimitation, reflecting occasional synonymizations and ongoing study (APG IV, 2016; POWO, 2024; Stevens, 2024). Human relevance is minor: several New Zealand taxa appear in cultivation as ornamental shrubs, occasionally used for hedging or revegetation projects, while most species remain wild‑collected and with little economic impact. Conservation and outlook include localized habitat loss on islands and archipelagoes, with limited taxonomic resolution and insufficient demographic data for many narrow endemics; targeted fieldwork and phylogenomic analyses are needed to clarify species boundaries and inform management (WFO, 2024; Conn, 1995).
