Rauvolfia (Apocynaceae; tribe Vinceae) is a pantropical genus of evergreen trees and shrubs numbering approximately 65 species worldwide, with major diversity in tropical Africa, the Mascarene Islands, South and Southeast Asia, and the Neotropics (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). In India, Rauvolfia verticillata (L.) Baill. is widely treated as the nomenclatural type (Verdcourt, 1955). Plants possess milky latex, simple opposite to whorled leaves, and lack stipules. Inflorescences are terminal or pseudo-axillary cymes; flowers are typically 5‑merous with a slender corolla tube that may be greenish or white in African species and often yellow to orange in Asian taxa. The fruit comprises paired or sometimes solitary drupes. Fruits are often fleshy and suggest mammal or bird dispersal; floral morphology supports visitation by moths or butterflies, but detailed pollinator data remain incomplete in many species (Verdcourt, 1955; Leeuwenberg & Kupicha, 1985).

Species richness concentrates in Africa (including Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands) and in South and Southeast Asia; a smaller suite occurs in the Neotropics from Mexico to northern South America and the Caribbean (Verdcourt, 1955). Rauvolfia inhabits lowland to lower montane forests, woodlands, river margins, and coastal vegetation up to about 1800 m. Endemism is high on islands such as Madagascar and the Mascarenes, while continental taxa (e.g., African Rauvolfia vomitoria Afzel.) are often widespread (Verdcourt, 1955). Chromosome counts are incompletely surveyed across the genus; no stable base number is yet supported by cross‑taxon consensus.

Subgeneric classification has varied historically. Verdcourt (1955) recognized several sections, whereas the more recent treatments (Leeuwenberg & Kupicha, 1985) have taken a broader view without formal sections, reflecting ongoing uncertainty around sectional limits and species delimitation in Africa and Asia. APG updates continue to place Rauvolfia firmly in Apocynaceae subfamily Rauvolfioideae (APG IV, 2016). A major taxonomic shift concerns Old World Rauvolfia—R. vomitoria and its allies have been reinstated and segregated from a broadly defined Rauvolfia serpentina complex (Ichim, 2015).

Many species are cultivated for ornament or shade, notably Rauvolfia vomitoria in parts of Africa; in India and Southeast Asia, Rauvolfia serpentina is widely planted in agroforestry and as an ornamental street tree, while some weedy taxa persist in disturbed sites (POWO, 2024). The wood of certain African species (e.g., R. vomitoria) is locally used for timber. A few taxa are invasive in certain habitats, though comprehensive global assessments remain lacking. Major threats include deforestation and overharvesting for wild collection in some regions; R. serpentina, for example, is considered near‑threatened in parts of its native range (IUCN, 2024). Future research integrating phylogenomics, life‑history studies, and conservation status updates will clarify species limits and guide sustainable use.
