Genus Toxocarpus in Tribe Secamoneae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Toxocarpus (Wight & Arn.) is a climbing genus of the family Apocynaceae, subfamily Asclepiadoideae, tribe Marsdenieae. The name is conserved with Toxocarpus wightii (Wight & Arnott, 1836). About 180 species are currently accepted (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024), making it one of the larger genera of the Marsdenieae. Its range extends from the Indian subcontinent through Southeast Asia to Malesian region, New Guinea and the western Pacific, occurring in lowland to montane rainforests and sometimes on limestone outcrops.
Morphologically, members are woody vines or shrubs bearing opposite, usually glabrous to sparsely hairy leaves that lack stipules. Stems exude latex when cut. Inflorescences are axillary, umbelliform cymes; flowers are pentamerous, with a rotate to campanulate corolla that may be white, pink or pale yellow. Corolla bears a corona and the stamens are fused into a gynostegium bearing pollinia attached to a translator apparatus – floral structure of the Asclepiadoideae. The ovary consists of two free carpels with numerous ovules on axile placentae, maturing into a pair of follicular fruits that dehisce along a single suture. Seeds are comose, bearing a tuft of hairs that facilitate wind dispersal.
Species diversity peaks in the Malesian region, with many narrow endemics in Borneo, the Philippines and New Guinea (Rapini et al., 2020). Species occupy moist forest understories from sea level to roughly 1500 m, with several taxa restricted to limestone karst. Pollination is primarily by moths and flies, a pattern inferred from nectar rewards and floral morphology, although detailed studies remain few (Kunze et al., 2011).
Taxonomically, recent molecular phylogenies support Toxocarpus as a monophyletic clade within Marsdenieae, but a number of species previously placed in the genus have been transferred to Vincetoxicum or other segregate genera (Liede & Albers, 2020). The current circumscription follows the Kew checklist (POWO, 2024) and World Flora Online (WFO, 2024), which recognise about 180 species. Alternative treatments that expand Vincetoxicum to include Toxocarpus exist but have not been widely adopted.
In horticulture, the genus is of limited commercial importance; a few species with showy flowers are occasionally cultivated as ornamental vines in tropical gardens, but no major crop, timber or invasive weed status is recorded.
Conservation concerns centre on habitat loss across Malesia; many species have restricted ranges and are assessed as data‑deficient or threatened (Rapini et al., 2020). Clarifying species limits and resolving phylogenetic placement will improve conservation planning and horticultural use.
