Strophanthus DC. (family Apocynaceae) comprises approximately 38-40 species of woody climbers and shrubs distributed across sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). These typically occur in rainforest margins, woodland, and savanna habitats from sea level to mid-elevations. The type species is Strophanthus gratus (G. Don) Benth. ex Hook.f., following modern consensus (Bruyns, 2006).

Diagnostic morphology distinguishes the genus through opposite, simple leaves with entire margins and prominent interpetiolar stipules. The inflorescences are terminal or axillary cymes bearing large, showy flowers with deeply lobed corollas bearing distinctive basal appendages (corona structures) and paired anthers. The ovary is superior and typically consists of two separate carpels that fuse at the stigma, developing into paired follicles containing seeds with apical comas (hairy tufts) facilitating wind dispersal (Stevens, 2001).

Diversity concentrates in West and Central Africa, with significant centers of endemism in the Congo Basin and Madagascar. Typical habitats include riverine forests, woodland margins, and secondary growth. Major biogeographic patterns reflect the classic African forest-savanna disjunctions, with several species restricted to montane areas (Harley et al., 2000).

Pollination is primarily entomophilous, with large bees and moths attracted to the nectariferous flowers, though specific mechanisms remain incompletely documented. The genus contains cardiac glycosides (cardenolides) concentrated in bark and roots, likely functioning as defensive compounds (Heinz et al., 1999). Chromosome counts of 2n=22 are well-established (Röser, 1994).

Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have confirmed Strophanthus as monophyletic within Apocynaceae subfamily Asclepiadoideae, supporting traditional sectional classifications (Kunze, 2004). However, some species boundaries remain poorly resolved, and hybridization may occur in areas of sympatry (Bruyns, 2006). Alternative treatments merging certain closely related genera have been proposed but remain controversial (Goyder et al., 2012).

Several species serve as ornamental plants due to showy flowers, though all parts are toxic if ingested. The genus has economic importance in traditional arrow的制作, though medicinal claims are not addressed here. The most widely cultivated ornamental is S. gratus (Meerow, 2003).

Conservation concerns focus on habitat loss and overharvesting in parts of the range. Further research into species delimitation and reproductive biology remains a priority, with climate change potentially threatening montane endemics.
