The genus centers its diversity in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa, typically occupying arid, rocky habitats with winter rainfall. The type species is P. punctatus (Masson) R.Br., which has historically served as the nomenclatural anchor for this group.
The genus exhibits the characteristic asclepiad morphology of reduced leaves and succulent stems that are typically four-angled and often covered with tubercles. The plants form compact, clumping mats with stems reaching 2-10 cm in height. Flowers arise in small cymes from the stem bases, with the typical stapeliad structure of five sepals and five petals that are usually fused into a shallow tube. The corolla lobes often spread horizontally or reflex slightly, while the corona is well-developed with the distinctive double structure common in Asclepiadoideae. Ovaries are superior with axile placentation, and fruits form the characteristic paired follicles containing seeds with apical tufts of hairs for wind dispersal.
