Suggest a correction!Hoodia (Sweet ex Decne.) is a succulent genus in Apocynaceae (Asclepiadoideae). Approximately 13–16 species are accepted, with Hoodia gordonii (Masson) Sweet ex Decne. as the type species. The genus ranges through arid southwestern Africa (Namibia, the Cape Provinces of South Africa, and into Botswana), occupying Nama- and Succulent Karoo, and desert and semi-desert shrublands. It is a characteristic element of extremely arid, nutrient-poor landscapes with high solar radiation and erratic rainfall.
Hoodia forms leafless, perennial, erect to spreading clumps of strongly ribbed, succulent stems that are typically green to grey-green and may be glabrous or slightly hairy; vestigial leaves are reduced to minute non-persistent scales. Stems are cylindrical to globose in young plants, becoming distinctly angled with prominent ribs as they mature; surface texture ranges from smooth to warty tubercles. Inflorescences arise near stem tips and bear large, sessile or shortly pedicellate flowers with a distinctive, often foul “carrion” scent. Corollas are rotate to campanulate, frequently marked with patterns that guide pollinators to the corona; the corona is annular or divided into lobe complexes typical of Asclepiadoideae. Ovaries are superior with numerous ovules per carpel; fruits are paired follicles bearing tufted seeds adapted for wind dispersal.
Species richness and distribution are centered in the Namib–Richtersveld corridor and the arid interior of the Cape, with notable local radiations and micro-endemism on quartz or limestone outcrops. Most taxa occur at low to moderate elevations on rocky plains, gravel plains, or drainage lines, often on mineral-rich soils; many are localized, and several are known from single or few localities.
Pollination is strongly inferred as carrion-fly mediated (stench, coloration, and exudates guide necrophagous flies), although experimental confirmation varies among taxa and is not comprehensive for the genus. Seed dispersal is aerodynamic via comose hairs. Chromosome counts are best known as x=11 (e.g., H. gordonii), consistent with many Asclepiadoideae, though broader surveys remain incomplete (Albers & Meve, 2020).
Taxonomically, Hoodia comprises two commonly recognized sections: Section Hoodia (typified by the slenderly tapered corolla forms such as H. gordonii) and Section Monilae (basionym Monila E. Mey., typified by H. ruschii), both maintained by Bruyns et al. (2014). Bruyns (2012) redefined Hoodia sensu lato to include Quaqua and a broadened circumscription, but that broad treatment has not been universally adopted; most taxonomic platforms maintain Hoodia as distinct from Quaqua and retain the traditional two-section scheme. Species limits remain unsettled for several complexes, and the exact number of accepted names varies with source (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).
The genus is horticulturally significant and popular with succulent enthusiasts, but commercial demand for Hoodia parts has raised conservation concerns. Although some taxa are widely cultivated, many are rare in situ and face pressures from habitat degradation and illegal collection. Hoodia is listed in CITES Appendix II; specific taxa such as H. gordonii have been included in national Red List assessments, reflecting risk from localized population declines (SANBI, 2024). Formal conservation assessments lag in several narrow endemics, and targeted monitoring, seed banking, and ex situ cultivation are priorities to mitigate future losses.
