Vinca major has been reported as a simple household remedy for washing sores and other skin irritations in parts of Greece, and the leaves have been macerated in hot water as an astringent wash (Hanlidou et al., 2004). In France, herbalists used cold macerations of the aerial parts for “astringent and disinfectant” mouth rinses and washes for mild mouth ulcers and inflamed gums (Lagorce et al., 1999). In parts of Spain, small amounts of the leaves have been taken as a mild calming infusion by the elderly, while a stronger decoction of the aerial parts was used as a wash for bruises and sprains by rural healers (Rivera et al., 1994). These uses are based on the plant’s recognized astringent quality and its availability as a common garden and hedgerow plant, and are documented in ethnobotanical field surveys and herbal compendia rather than in clinical practice.
If making a mild astringent preparation for topical use, macerate 6 g of fresh Vinca major leaves (or 3 g dried) in 250 mL of just‑boiled water for 20 minutes, cool, and strain; apply with a clean cloth to affected skin 2–3 times a day. This uses the plant for a gargle or wash at very low concentration, rather than internal use. Vinca major contains vinca alkaloids that can be toxic if ingested or misused; avoid using it on broken skin with poor circulation, on deep wounds, or by children, and do not consume it without expert guidance (Lagorce et al., 1999; Hanlidou et al., 2004).
The key constituents responsible for the plant’s activity are the vinca alkaloids vincamine and vincine (the latter commonly called reserpinine), as well as flavonoids that support mild astringent effects (Czechowska, 1968; Mincheva and Boncheva, 1971). Vincamine in particular has drawn research interest for vascular effects, whereas Vincine/reserpinine contributes to overall alkaloid content, explaining historical use of mild macerations and washes where astringency rather than intense activity is sought (Czechowska, 1968; Mincheva and Boncheva, 1971).
Vinca major remains widely cultivated and naturalized, with modern availability largely in horticulture rather than as a standardized herbal product. Contemporary scientific work focuses on its alkaloids and their vascular actions, and field records show ongoing but highly cautious traditional use of simple macerations and washes where caution and dilution are emphasized (Hanlidou et al., 2004).
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Vinca major is primarily cultivated as an ornamental plant and ground cover in horticulture.
Scientific/model-organism use:
The species serves as a model organism in plant biology research, particularly for studies of alkaloid biosynthesis pathways and xenobiotic metabolism. It is included in research databases such as the NCBI Taxonomy and serves as a reference species in comparative genomics studies of Apocynaceae.
Properties relevant to use:
The plant contains alkaloids including vincamine and reserpine-like compounds, though these are not utilized in the industrial applications noted above. The species exhibits invasive growth characteristics that make it effective for erosion control and ground coverage applications.
