Strophanthus sarmentosus is a deciduous shrub or liana native to west and central tropical Africa. It grows up to 40 metres (130 ft) long with a stem diameter of 15 centimetres (6 in). It has fragrant white to purple flowers with red or purple streaks on the inside. It is known by many names including spider tresses and poison arrow vine. It is found in forested areas from sea level to 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) altitude and has many medicinal uses including joint pain, head lice, eye conditions and venereal disease. It is also used as arrow poison and was discovered by botanist John Baldwin to be a natural source of the steroid hormone cortisone and used in the early manufacture of cortisone-based drugs.
