Among Andean and Amazonian peoples, Cascabela thevetia is known mainly as an emergency purgative and for clearing bronchial congestion. The Kofan of southern Colombia prepared leaf infusions to relieve asthma, while in western Amazonia, both leaf decoctions and the milky sap were taken as emetics (Schultes and Raffauf, 1994). In El Salvador, bark decoctions were used in rural folk practice as a purgative, and this internal use is specifically noted by Marroquín (1973) for Thevetia species in Central American herbal traditions. Cuban physicians and folk practitioners described the bark as a drastic purgative when boiled into a decoction (Volk, 1975). Contemporary ethnomedical surveys likewise record bark preparations used as drastic purgatives in parts of the Caribbean (Brown et al., 2004). These preparations emphasize the bark or leaves as the plant parts most commonly employed.

For safe external research only, a 1:5 ethanol tincture (dry herb) can be prepared using 20 g of dried bark or leaves placed in 100 mL of 60% ethanol and macerated, shaking daily, for 4–6 weeks. This product is only for topical use and must never be taken internally. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and keep out of reach of children; accidental ingestion of any part of the plant can cause severe cardiac effects. The bark and seeds contain well-established cardiac glycosides, notably thevetoxin and thevenerine, which underlie both the intense purgative action and the serious toxicity.

Modern relevance is limited by safety concerns. While the plant remains recognized in regional ethnobotanical and herbal literature, contemporary herbal practitioners generally avoid internal use of Cascabela thevetia because even small oral doses can be life-threatening, and pharmacopoeial-grade extracts are not commercially available. Active constituents documented for the species include the cardiac glycosides thevetoxin and thevenerine (Wichtl, 2004), alongside simpler cardioactive principles like neriifolin, corresponding to the plant’s historic use as a drastic purgative and its recognized toxicity.

Common products:
Seed oil is the primary documented product of Cascabela thevetia. Seeds contain 20–43% oil by mass; the oil is a drying/semi‑drying oil suitable for biodiesel and soap. Seeds also contain the cardiac glycosides thevetin and peruvoside, which impose strict handling and disposal requirements for oil and cake processing.

Industrial and craft applications:
- Biodiesel: Fatty acid methyl esters from C. thevetia seed oil have been demonstrated to meet ASTM D6751 for biodiesel, with IV 100–135 g I2/100 g, SV 190–206 mg KOH/g, and CN > 51. Transesterification requires base catalysis; acid-catalyzed esterification may be needed if free fatty acids are high. Use is restricted by alkaloid content and associated environmental risks.
- Soap and oleochemicals: Seed oil has been evaluated as a feed material for soap manufacture and glycerol production; SV and IV indicate suitable saponification and drying behavior. Neutralization and detoxification steps are required to remove cardenolides.
- Industrial materials: Seed oil and oilcake have been investigated as potential feedstocks for bioplastics and biochars; practical adoption is limited by toxicity and processing constraints.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No food uses are documented; due to cardenolide toxicity, there is no use as food or food ingredient.

Colorants and tanning:
No documented use of leaves, bark, or wood for dyes, inks, or tannins.

Wood and fiber:
No documented timber or fiber uses. Available references treat C. thevetia primarily as an ornamental shrub with no established wood industry use.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No documented production or use of essential oil, absolutes, or cosmetic ingredients from C. thevetia.

Properties relevant to use:
- Oil yield: 20–43% (seed).
- Fatty acid profile: high linoleic and oleic; minor palmitic/stearic; phototoxic/allelopathic compounds in leaf extracts.
- Fuel properties: IV 100–135 g I2/100 g; SV 190–206 mg KOH/g; saponification enables biodiesel and soap; cetane number > 51 in transesterified oil; CN at or above petrodiesel.
- Allelochemicals: bioactive cardenolides and other constituents that confer antimicrobial and insecticidal activity in extracts, restricting oil/cake applications without detoxification.
