Asclepias cordifolia, also known as heart-leaf milkweed or purple milkweed, is a perennial plant native to the western United States. It is valued by the Native American Miwok tribe for its stems, which were used to make string and rope. The plant has dark red-purple flowers and heart-shaped leaves, and is found in open or shaded woodland. It is named after the Greek physician Asclepius and is an important food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars. The Miwok people used it for various purposes, including making cordage and as a contraceptive and snakebite remedy. However, it can be toxic if not prepared properly.
