Nothofagus moorei, also known as Antarctic beech, is a significant tree species in the southern hemisphere, particularly in the Gondwana region. It is a member of the Nothofagaceae family and is found in southern South America and Australasia. It was first described in 1866 by Ferdinand von Mueller and is also known as "negrohead beech". The tree is evergreen and can grow up to 25 meters tall with dark green leaves and small, inconspicuous flowers. It produces a small woody fruit with three winged nuts. The tree has a complicated root structure and is slow to recover from fires. It is found in cool temperate rainforests at high altitudes in eastern Australia and is most abundant in the Barrington Tops plateau. There are also small populations in the Comboyne area of New South Wales. The tree is believed to have been more prolific in a cooler age and its distribution around the southern Pacific Ocean rim supports the theory of the ancient landmass Gondwana. It is a popular ornamental tree and can tolerate low temperatures, making it suitable for cultivation.
