Nothofagus gunnii, also known as tanglefoot or deciduous beech, is a deciduous shrub or small tree found only in the highlands of Tasmania, Australia. It was first described in 1847 and can grow up to 8 meters tall. It is mainly found at altitudes above 800 meters and is commonly seen in alpine and sub-alpine regions. Despite its name, it is not closely related to the beech trees found in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also known as Fuscospora gunnii, but this name change is not widely accepted. This species is endemic to Tasmania and is typically found in areas with high rainfall and no recent fire activity. It is rarely seen in cultivation due to its slow growth and specific environmental requirements. N. gunnii is an important species in its ecosystem, but its habitat is limited by fire sensitivity and it is not currently listed as endangered. It reproduces through wind-dispersed seeds and is wind-pollinated.
