Betula lenta, also known as sweet birch or black birch, is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It can reach heights of up to 30 meters and has distinctive bark that develops vertical cracks and rough patterns as it matures. The tree produces a strong wintergreen scent when its twigs are scraped. It has alternate ovate leaves and wind-pollinated catkin flowers. The oldest known B. lenta is 368 years old, and the species can live even longer in undisturbed ancient forests. The wood of black birch is used for furniture and cabinets, and its sap can be boiled to make syrup or birch beer. The inner bark can also be eaten raw or steeped to make tea. B. lenta is an important food source for caterpillars and a nesting material for leaf-cutter bees. It is not heavily browsed by deer, making it more abundant in areas with high deer populations.
