Alnus nepalensis, also known as Utis in Nepali and Nepalese alder in English, is a large alder tree found in the subtropical highlands of the Himalayas. It can reach up to 30 meters in height and is commonly used for land reclamation, as firewood, and for making charcoal. The tree has silver-gray bark and produces alternate, simple leaves with prominent veins. Its flowers are catkins, with male and female flowers growing on the same tree. It is found throughout the Himalayas at elevations of 500-3000 meters and can grow in a variety of soil types, including wet areas. The tree is valued for its ability to grow quickly and fix nitrogen in the soil. Its wood is moderately soft and is used for making boxes and as firewood. In recent years, it has been used by indigenous ethnic groups in Vietnam for forest regeneration.
