Xanthophyllum lanceatum is a tree in the Polygalaceae family that is found across Southeast Asia, from Sumatera to Bangladesh. It grows up to 15m tall and its leaves are used as a substitute for hops in beer making. The wood is used as fuel and the fruit, flowers, and leaves are regularly eaten by fish in the Mekong. It is found in wetland communities and has been observed to play a role in vegetation restoration. The tree has various vernacular names and has been used in folk medicine to treat chickenpox. Its extract has also shown inhibitory activity against a plant-pathogenic fungus. This species was first described by botanist Johannes Jacobus Smith in 1912.
