Xanthophyllum ferrugineum is a tree belonging to the Polygalaceae family, with the specific epithet ferrugineum meaning "rust-coloured". It can grow up to 25 meters tall with a trunk diameter of 60 centimeters and has smooth grey or greenish bark. The flowers are yellow or white, and the fruits are roundish and yellowish brown, measuring up to 2 cm in diameter. This tree is found only in Borneo and can be found in mixed dipterocarp forests at altitudes ranging from sea-level to 500 meters.
