Polygala smallii is a rare species of flowering plant in the milkwort family, endemic to the southeastern coast of Florida in the United States. It is a petite biennial herb growing 2 to 4 centimeters tall from the top of its taproot, with yellow-green flowers. It is threatened by the loss of its habitat, which is maintained by a natural fire regime, and by the outright consumption of its habitat for the construction of residential and commercial real estate. Fire is beneficial to the species, as it helps remove competing plants and triggers germination of the seeds. Conservation efforts must involve periodic prescribed burns or another method of opening the overgrown canopy.
