Smithia (Aiton) is a small genus in the legume family (Fabaceae, subfamily Papilionoideae) that currently contains roughly 12–14 accepted species (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). The plants are primarily herbaceous annuals or perennials that occur in tropical Africa, Madagascar, and South‑Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar), ranging from sea‑level grasslands to open woodland margins up to about 1 500 m. The type species is Smithia sensitiva Aiton, which has long served as the nomenclatural anchor for the group.

Morphologically the genus is distinguished by an erect to spreading habit, pinnately trifoliolate leaves with persistent stipules, and axillary racemes or compact spikes of typical papilionaceous flowers. The calyx is five‑lobed, the standard petal is relatively broad, and the ovary is superior with multiple ovules arranged on a single placenta; the mature fruit is a segmented loment that dehisces explosively, a feature shared with many Desmodieae (LPWG, 2017). Seed coats are smooth and the seedlings emerge with the characteristic “sensitive” movement of the leaflets that gave S. sensitiva its common name (Verdcourt, 1993).

The center of species richness lies in the Indian sub‑continent and the East‑African highlands; several taxa are regional endemics such as S. conferta of the Western Ghats and S. gracilis of the Ethiopian highlands. Species typically inhabit open grasslands, savanna margins, and lateritic soils, often persisting after disturbance because of their seed’s long dormancy.

Pollination is largely by bees attracted to the conspicuous banner of the flower, while seed dispersal is facilitated by the splitting loment that catapults seeds short distances. Chromosome numbers are occasionally reported as 2n = 20, implying a base number x = 10 (Lewis et al., 2005), though comprehensive cytological data are scarce.

Taxonomically, Smithia has been placed in the tribe Desmodieae (LPWG, 2017), whereas earlier treatments assigned it to Phaseoleae (Bail. 1858). Recent molecular work (Azani et al., 2022) confirms its placement within Desmodieae but shows a sister‑group relationship to Desmodium and Kummerowia, supporting the retention of Smithia as a distinct lineage. Some authors have suggested synonymising several Asian species under Cymbosema (O'Leary, 2020), but this view is not universally accepted (WFO, 2024).

Humans seldom cultivate Smithia for ornamentation; a few species are occasionally used as garden curiosities for their leaf‑folding habit. Several taxa are regarded as weeds in rice and other lowland crops, particularly S. sensitiva, which can invade paddy fields and reduce yields (Lewis et al., 2005). The genus provides no significant timber or food crops.

Conservation assessments are lacking, but regional endemics such as S. conferta are vulnerable to habitat conversion for agriculture and urban expansion. A few species have been recorded on the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, and a systematic conservation assessment across its range would fill a notable research gap.
