Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Neustanthus Benth. is a small climbing legume historically placed in the family Fabaceae, subfamily Papilionoideae, tribe Phaseoleae. Modern checklists treat the name as a synonym of Mucuna L., and no species are currently accepted under the original generic epithet (LPWG, 2017; POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024; Lewis et al., 2005). The few taxa once assigned to Neustanthus were predominantly tropical African vines, with a few reports from South America, occurring in lowland rainforest and riverine corridors from near sea level to about 1 200 m elevation.
The vines are twining, bearing trifoliolate leaves, small caducous stipules, and axillary or terminal racemes of papilionaceous flowers. The corolla is typically pink to deep violet, the keel strongly recurved, and the calyx is 5‑toothed, often spathaceous. Ten stamens are diadelphous (9 + 1), the vexillary filament free, and the ovary contains multiple ovules. Fruit is a flattened, somewhat woody legume that dehisces along one suture; seeds are black, orbicular, and enveloped by a fleshy aril that facilitates animal‑mediated dispersal (Lewis et al., 2005).
Historically, the genus comprised a handful of species confined to the Congo Basin and surrounding West African forests, each endemic to specific moist habitats. No pronounced centers of endemism are recognized, and most former Neustanthus taxa are now integrated into the broader Mucuna assemblage, which displays pantropical distribution and considerably higher species richness (c. 150 species). Consequently, the biogeographic pattern of the former genus is essentially a subset of the Mucuna range.
Pollination in the related Mucuna species is predominantly by large bees attracted to the showy, pendulous flowers, and seed dispersal is achieved by birds and mammals that consume the aril (Doyle & Luckow, 2003). Detailed chromosome counts for the former Neustanthus species are lacking, but Mucuna generally exhibits a base number of x = 11, a value inferred for the whole group but not yet confirmed for the Neustanthus lineage.
Taxonomically, Neustanthus was erected by Bentham (1867) to accommodate a few vines previously placed in Mucuna. Subsequent phylogenetic analyses, including the Legume Phylogeny Working Group synthesis, demonstrated that these taxa nest within Mucuna, prompting the synonymisation (LPWG, 2017; POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Earlier floras and monographs (e.g., Bentham, 1867; Bamps, 1976) retain the name, but the modern consensus has not been challenged in recent peer‑reviewed work.
Human relevance is modest; the former genus has no recorded horticultural or economic use, whereas several Mucuna species are cultivated as ornamentals and for their edible seeds. Conservation assessments for the former Neustanthus taxa are subsumed under Mucuna assessments, with no immediate threats identified beyond habitat loss in fragmented forest fragments.
Future research combining molecular phylogenetics with expanded herbarium surveys will clarify the status of any residual lineages and refine the geographic limits of the former Neustanthus taxa.
