Genus Dolichos in Subfamily Papilionoideae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Dolichos L. (family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae) is a legume genus of roughly 60–90 accepted species (conflicting totals among checklists reflect ongoing taxonomic flux). It is primarily African and Madagascan, with a few continental Asian taxa occasionally treated here; species are characteristic of savannas, woodlands, and seasonal grasslands. Dolichos trilobus L. is generally taken as type (WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024).
Diagnostic morphology centers on twining or scrambling herbs to subshrubs with pinnately trifoliolate leaves, conspicuous stipules (often reflexed), and inflorescences that range from racemes to long, axillary pseudoracemes bearing papilionaceous flowers. Flowers usually have an openly reflexed banner and an incurved keel; the ovary is typically monocarpellary, and the pod is a legume, dehiscent or indehiscent, with several seeds. Stems are often glabrescent to pubescent, and the leaf rachis ends in a short acumen or mucro.
Diversity is concentrated in eastern to southern Africa and Madagascar, with notable centers of endemism. Species occur from low elevations to medium altitudes in open, fire-influenced systems and seasonally arid scrub, often on sandy or granitic substrates; few are confined to high elevations (Lewis et al., 2005; WFO, 2024).
Intrinsic biology is less documented. Most appear to be outcrossing and visited by bees or other insects (typical of papilionaceous Fabaceae), though precise pollinators are unverified. Seeds are physically dispersed as dehiscent pods shatter or as animals collect fruits; ecological studies in African savannas suggest facilitation of establishment in microsites created by fire or grazing, but life-history details remain patchy (Lewis et al., 2005).
Taxonomy and phylogeny are unsettled. Dolichos has historically been broadly circumscribed and was split by Verdcourt (1970) into a smaller Dolichos sensu stricto and a separate Macrotyloma, a treatment widely influential but contested (Verdcourt, 1970; van der Burgt et al., 2022). Modern analyses place these genera within Phaseoleae or closely allied clades but leave interfamilial relationships relatively unresolved, and checklists diverge on species lists and generic limits (Frijters & Borssum Waalkes, 1968; Lewis et al., 2005; POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024; van der Burgt et al., 2022). Consequently, synonyms and transfers between Dolichos, Macrotyloma, Lablab, and related taxa are ongoing.
Human relevance is modest: few Dolichos species are cultivated, and none constitutes a major crop or timber; some are minor ornamentals or components of local forage, and Lablab purpureus (hyacinth bean) is sometimes confused with African Dolichos but belongs elsewhere.
Conservation and outlook remain data-deficient in many ranges, particularly Madagascar. Shortfalls in taxonomic clarity, species-level distribution data, and phylogenetic resolution constrain conservation assessments and horticultural guidance. Improved phylogenomics and modern revisions are needed to stabilize generic and species limits (van der Burgt et al., 2022; POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).
