Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Arachis L. belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae) and comprises about 80 species concentrated in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Its type species is Arachis hypogaea L., the cultivated peanut, and its typical biomes include tropical and subtropical savannas (especially Cerrado) and seasonally dry forests. Species are usually herbaceous with a prostrate to ascending habit; leaves are pinnately compound with two to three pairs of leaflets and persistent stipules. Flowers are solitary or in small axillary racemes; the calyx is bilabiate with a well-developed standard, wings, and a keel formed by fused petals, and the anthers are dimorphic. After fertilization the gynophore elongates, pushing the ovary into the soil where the geocarpic pod develops, the defining feature of the genus; pods are indehiscent, terete to slightly compressed, with reticulate to rugose surfaces and seeds lacking an aril.
Diversity peaks in the Brazilian Highlands and adjacent Argentine-Chacoan areas; many narrow endemics occur in fire- and moisture-driven savannas at low to mid elevations. Flowering is often synchronized with the onset of rains, and geocarpy ensures seed maturation in situ during the dry season. Autogamy is common in cultivated peanut, but wild taxa show varying levels of outcrossing facilitated by bees. Base chromosome number is x=10; cultivated peanut is an allotetraploid (2n=40), whereas many wild species are diploid, with polyploidy and introgression implicated in speciation and crop evolution (Krapovickas & Gregory, 1994; Robson et al., 2016; Bertioli et al., 2019).
Sectional classification based on morphology, geography, and cytogenetics remains the primary framework; the cultivated peanut falls within section Arachis and the closest wild progenitors among “A-genome” diploids (Krapovickas & Gregory, 1994). Molecular phylogenetics has clarified relationships among sections and highlighted complex reticulation, but detailed infrageneric updates lag behind global treatments (Ceolin & Válio, 1992; RAPD studies in Krapovickas & Gregory, 1994). POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024; GBIF, 2024 list the accepted species, while recent genomic work refines genomic composition and genome relationships relevant to breeding (Bertioli et al., 2019).
Human relevance centers on A. hypogaea as a major oilseed and food legume, and several wild relatives provide forage (A. pintoi, A. repens) and valuable genetic diversity for stress tolerance and disease resistance. Conservation is a priority given habitat loss in Cerrado and associated neotropical savannas and the threat of genetic erosion in crop landraces. Further integrative taxonomy and population genomics are needed to align sectional boundaries with phylogenetic evidence and to guide both breeding and conservation strategies.
