Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Eperua (Aubl.) is a Neotropical genus in subfamily Detarioideae (Fabaceae), tribe Detarieae, with about 14 accepted species (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024; GBIF, 2024). The type species is Eperua falcata Aubl. (van der Burgt, 2015). It ranges across northern South America from Venezuela and the Guianas through northern Brazil into Colombia and Peru, most commonly in lowland tropical rain forest on well-drained, nutrient-poor soils along the Guiana Shield, with local occurrences in terra firme and occasional swamp margins at low to mid elevations.
Trees are large and buttressed, bearing paripinnate leaves with entire leaflets that often display domatia on their abaxial surface, paired stipules that are usually caducous, and sometimes tardily so. Inflorescences are terminal or axillary, large, and paniculate with prominent bracteoles. Flowers are pentamerous, with free sepals, five spreading petals, and a characteristic long-exserted staminal sheath that splits into two opposite halves; the ovary is sessile with 1–2 ovules. Fruits are laterally compressed, wing-margined samaras that dehisce along one edge, each typically containing a single seed.
The highest species concentrations occur in the Guianas and adjacent Amazonian Venezuela and northern Brazil, with several narrowly endemic taxa to the Guiana Shield. The genus favors terra firme forests on crystalline or lateritic substrates, often along drainage lines, and some taxa occur in swamp forest or on white-sand “campinas.”
Pollination biology remains inadequately studied in most species, and no dispersal mechanisms are well documented for the genus. The base chromosome number is not established in the literature cited here (see LPWG, 2017).
Taxonomically, Eperua is placed in Detarieae as defined by recent classifications (Lewis et al., 2005; LPWG, 2017). The genus has been treated broadly since Cowan’s (1958, 1967) revisions; later floristic works (e.g., Barneby, 1996) have largely maintained this circumscription while noting species-level endemics. Synonymizations and subtribal placements continue to be refined as phylogenetic data for the Neotropical Detarioideae accumulate (Mackinder, 2005; Bruneau et al., 2008; LPWG, 2017). Current treatments accept about 14 species (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024; GBIF, 2024).
Eperua is prominent in timber circles (e.g., wallaba) and occasionally cultivated, but precise horticultural or conservation assessments remain limited due to incomplete field data. Logging and habitat degradation are plausible threats, and taxonomic refinement and ecological monitoring are priorities as sustainable management practices are developed.
