Bark and pod hulls contain condensed tannins and yield brown dyes used in leather dyeing and wool coloring in East Africa (Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia); bark extracts are used in leather tanning (World Agroforestry; PROTA). Products: natural brown dye solutions, vegetable tannin extracts. Properties: condensed tannins, high phenolic content, affinity for protein fibers and collagen in hides. Standards: local quality specifications for vegetable tannins and dyeing are applied; no global ISO specific to this species.
Properties relevant to use:
Condensed tannins provide leather tanning capacity and water-solubility for dye baths; plant materials are collected seasonally and sun-dried before extraction.
