Wisteria frutescens, commonly known as American wisteria, is a deciduous climbing vine native to the southeastern United States. It is a member of the Fabaceae family and is closely related to other wisteria species. This woody perennial vine can grow up to 15 meters long and produces clusters of blue-purple flowers in late spring to early summer. Its foliage consists of shiny, dark-green, pinnately compound leaves and it also bears bean-like seed pods. American wisteria is shade tolerant but requires partial or full sun to flower. It is a popular choice for bonsai artists due to its manageable size and charming woodland flowers. This species is similar to Kentucky wisteria, but can be distinguished by its shorter racemes, scented flowers, and smooth seed pods. American wisteria is susceptible to pests and diseases such as aphids, leaf miners, and crown gall, but is generally considered low maintenance. It contains a toxic compound called wisterin in all parts of the plant, which can cause gastrointestinal issues if ingested.

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment. |
Requires Soaking: These seeds need to be soaked in warm water until they swell, which can take 24-48 hours. Seeds that float are usually not viable and should be discarded, along with the soaking water. |
Sow seeds immediately as their viability decreases rapidly, or they best germinate when fresh. If stored, seeds might need temperature cycling and patience to germinate. |
