Vicia cracca, also known as tufted vetch, cow vetch, bird vetch, blue vetch, or boreal vetch, is a flowering plant in the pea and bean family Fabaceae. It is native to Europe and Asia but has been introduced to other continents, including North America, where it is considered a common weed. This fast-growing plant can reach up to 2 meters in length and has pinnate leaves with 8-12 pairs of leaflets. It produces cascading purple to violet flowers that are mainly visited by bumblebees. The plant is known for its nitrogen-fixing properties and is often used as a forage crop for cattle. It is also beneficial for other plants and is a food source for bees and butterflies. However, in areas where it is not native, cow vetch can be invasive and may crowd out native plants. Its use as a cover crop and source of green manure has led to its introduction and naturalization in many areas.

Germination/Propagation Top

Suggest a correction or add new data!
Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Requires Soaking: These seeds need to be soaked in warm water until they swell, which can take 24-48 hours. Seeds that float are usually not viable and should be discarded, along with the soaking water.
