Vicia bithynica, also known as Bithynian vetch, is a flowering plant in the bean family. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus and later moved to the genus Vicia. The name comes from the ancient kingdom of Bithynia in modern-day Turkey. This annual plant has climbing stems and leaves with 2-3 pairs of leaflets and branched tendrils. Its flowers are purple and white and produce a hairy pod with 4-8 seeds. Vicia bithynica is not consumed by humans or livestock due to its high levels of vicine, which can cause favism. It is commonly found in calcareous grassland and dry scrub habitats, and is native to the Mediterranean and Europe. It is also found in isolated populations in the Azores, United States, Australia, and New Zealand. In Britain, it is considered to be a plant of coastal undercliffs, beaches, and hedges, and is classified as Vulnerable due to its declining abundance.
