Ulex minor, also known as dwarf furze or dwarf gorse, is a small evergreen shrub in the Fabaceae family. It is found in eastern England, France, Spain, and Portugal, specifically in lowland heathland habitats. Typically growing to about 30 centimeters in height, it can reach up to 1 meter in shaded and ungrazed conditions. The plant has small spines and leaves, and its shoots are modified into soft, green spines. Its yellow flowers, which have a pea-like structure, bloom in late summer and autumn. The fruit is a legume and is partially covered by the remains of the flower. Due to its soft spines, dwarf furze is often grazed by livestock and wild herbivores. Interestingly, it has a limited distribution and does not overlap much with its close relative, western gorse.
