Strongylodon macrobotrys, also known as jade vine, is a leguminous perennial liana (woody vine) found in the tropical forests of the Philippines. It was discovered in 1841 by members of the United States Exploring Expedition and named by botanist Asa Gray in 1854. The vine has thick stems and can reach up to 18 meters in length as it crawls up tall trees to reach sunlight. Its pale green foliage spreads over the canopy and its flowers, which are pollinated by bats, hang in pendent trusses of up to 75 flowers. The turquoise color of the flowers is a result of a combination of anthocyanin and flavone glucoside. The vine is considered an endangered species due to habitat destruction and the decrease of its natural pollinators. It is prized in tropical and subtropical gardens for its unusual colored flowers and can be grown in glasshouses or conservatories in colder climates. The flowers are edible and are eaten as vegetables in the Philippines. The vine is also susceptible to the Soybean mosaic virus.
