Lupinus rivularis, also known as riverbank lupine, is a species of lupine native to western North America. It is found in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, mainly in coastal habitats with sandy, well-drained soils and moderate precipitation. This plant has a robust stem, palmately compound leaves, and light purple flowers with a distinct aroma. It is an important pioneer species, able to establish itself in disturbed environments with reduced competition. Riverbank lupine is considered endangered in British Columbia due to various threats, but its distribution is stable in other areas. It has multiple uses, including erosion control, food for wildlife, ornamental decoration, medicinal purposes, and cover crops. Its nitrogen fixation abilities make it effective for promoting revegetation, and its seeds serve as a food source for birds. The Thompson Indians of British Columbia also used this plant for medicinal purposes.
