Lotus purpureus, also known as asparagus-pea or winged pea, is a type of annual herb that is native to countries around the Mediterranean. It is a low-growing plant that produces striking deep red flowers and unique seed pods with longitudinal wings. This plant is primarily grown for its edible green seed pods, which are commonly used as a vegetable and are known by the same names as the plant itself. While it is native to the Mediterranean region, it has been introduced to other areas as well.
